What Kitchen Backsplash Options Do You Recommend?
Your choice of kitchen backsplash can be used to add colour, pattern and functionality to your space. In this article, we discuss the materials, benefits and styles our clients often choose for their kitchen projects.
Bulthaup Wall Panelling System
One of our favourite choices for a backsplash is the inclusion of the wall panel system. It provides space for useful storage accessories as well as being extremely low maintenance.
There is hanging storage for herbs or ceramic jars, easy-to-reach kitchen roll holders, and elegantly designed hooks for tea towels.
The bulthaup b3 function wall can be designed to incorporate different types of panels including glass, laminate and metal. In this example, golden anodised aluminium panels provide the opportunity to play with light. The introduction of surfaces that reflect different tones, depending on the time of day, can add interest to the character of the living space.
Glass
Glass backsplashes are a sleek and contemporary option. Glass backsplashes can provide a reflective surface that can brighten up a room and make it feel more spacious.
A glass backsplash can be made of clear or coloured tempered glass, which is highly durable. Unlike other materials, glass is non-porous, making it easy to clean and maintain.
Glass backsplashes can be installed in various ways, including as large, single panels or as smaller, mosaic-style tiles. They can also be customized with a variety of colours and patterns to fit any design style. For example, in this project, the glass has been back-painted to complement the tones of the kitchen.
Stone and Quartz (engineered stone)
Stone and quartz backsplashes are a popular choice for homeowners who want to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to their kitchen or bathroom. A backsplash made of natural stone, such as granite, marble, or slate, can provide a durable and long-lasting surface that is resistant to moisture, heat, and stains. The unique patterns and textures found in natural stone add a sense of depth and character to the overall design of the room.
In this project, we used 20mm Compac Unique Calacatta for the island, the worktops and the backsplash to create coherence throughout the space.
Laminate Panels
In this kitchen, the backsplash is created using Flint laminate, matching the adjacent tall units to ensure continuity.
Made of multiple layers of paper or fabric, laminate backsplashes are coated with a clear, protective layer that makes them resistant to moisture, stains, and scratches making them durable.
At Hobsons Choice, we rely on bulthaup for our laminate. This is because there is simply no similar comparison. Laminate backsplashes can come in a wide range of colours, patterns, and textures, making it easy to find one that fits your design style.
Printed Glass
Printed glass backsplashes are a creative and unique way to add a personal touch to your kitchen. This type of backsplash is made by printing a high-resolution image or pattern onto a sheet of tempered glass. The result is a vibrant and durable surface that can showcase anything from a favourite piece or artwork to a custom design. RedDogGlass supplied this specific piece to take pride in place in this stunning Georgian home.
As the image is protected behind the glass they are just as easy to clean as a regular glass backsplash. Printed glass backsplashes can be a great way to inject personality into a space.
Upstands
An upstand backsplash is a simple and practical way to protect the wall behind a kitchen counter. This type of backsplash is typically made of the same material as the countertop and extends vertically up the wall. The upstand backsplash helps to prevent damage to the wall in “spill-prone” areas.
Upstand backsplashes are available in a range of materials, including granite, quartz, and laminate, and can be customised to match any countertop design. In this kitchen project, our client chose 20mm Caesarstone Clamshell for the worktop and the upstand backsplash.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel backsplashes are a popular choice for homeowners who want a modern, industrial look in their kitchen. Made of durable and non-corrosive material, stainless steel is resistant to heat, moisture, and stains, making it an ideal choice for high-traffic areas.
The material is incredibly easy to look after, as it can be wiped down with a damp cloth and require no special cleaning products. As well as being highly functional, the reflective surface of stainless steel can also help to brighten up a room.
