Advice for Designing a Small Kitchen

Designing a small kitchen presents unique challenges, particularly when it comes to maximising storage and functionality.

At Hobson’s Choice, our designers, Guy Foan and Pieter du Toit, bring decades of expertise to crafting innovative solutions for compact spaces. Below, they share their insights on how to approach storage, layout, and appliance selection in smaller kitchens.

  1. Clever Storage Solutions for Small Kitchens

When every inch counts, it’s essential to think creatively about storage. Guy emphasises the importance of utilising vertical space: “Top boxes above tall cupboards can add valuable storage, but accessibility is key—make sure these areas are practical to use.” Adjusting wall cabinet heights and incorporating deeper cabinets can also help maximise storage potential without crowding the room.

The area under the sink is often overlooked but has great potential. Guy suggests integrating bins here to free up space in other cupboards, while functional additions like drawer organisers or pull-out systems can make the most of narrow or hard-to-reach spaces.

“We also love using functional boxes positioned at the rear of worktops to store items like knives or oils,” he notes. This keeps worktops clear, enhancing both aesthetics and usability.

2. Designing an Efficient Layout

In small kitchens, an effective layout is crucial. “Maximising uninterrupted worktop space is better than having several small, disjointed areas,” says Pieter. For example, placing the hob flush with the work surface can extend usable prep space. He adds, “Where possible, position the cooktop with sightlines into the room so the cook isn’t isolated from family or guests.”

In narrow galley kitchens, grouping key elements—such as the sink, oven, and hob—on one side can reduce unnecessary movement and improve workflow. “Minimising crossing paths helps avoid collisions in busy family spaces,” Pieter explains. He also suggests placing the fridge near seating areas to prevent traffic through cooking zones, streamlining access to frequently used items.

3. Balancing Worktop Space and Storage

The balance between worktop space and storage often depends on lifestyle and household size. “A bank of tall cupboards offers more storage but sacrifices worktop space,” Guy notes. To address this, incorporating pocket doors or roller shutters can provide additional concealed work areas for small appliances like coffee machines, without encroaching on worktop space.

Factors such as natural light, door positions, and windows can also influence design decisions. “We might raise a window height to allow worktops to extend underneath or block unnecessary doors to create a more functional elevation,” Pieter adds.

4. Choosing the Right Appliances

Compact or combination appliances can be a game-changer in small kitchens. Combining a conventional oven with a microwave or steamer can free up space for additional storage. “Slimline dishwashers and boiling water taps are great for saving space too,” says Guy. He also highlights innovative solutions such as Fisher & Paykel’s dishwasher drawers, which only occupy half the height of a standard unit, allowing for extra storage below.

Appliance selection ultimately comes down to the client’s cooking habits and household needs. Pieter advises, “We ask questions about how often they cook, the type of meals they prepare, and whether they rely on features like steaming or reheating. This helps us recommend appliances that suit their lifestyle without overcomplicating things.”
